Explaining the Paradigm Change
Modes of Explanation
All of the writings reviewed in Chapters 3 and 4 that have contrasted various conceptions of the technological and ecological social paradigms have implicitly assumed or explicitly argued that a basic paradigm change is presently occurring in the United States and other industrial nations. In general, however, those writers have made only limited efforts to explain the underlying causes of this change or to test their explanations empirically.
